When You Lift Your Eyes, Remember Who Holds You
Psalm 121:1–2
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” — Psalm 121:1–2 (KJV)
Have you ever been so overwhelmed by what is directly in front of you that you forgot to look up?
Sometimes life feels like standing at the bottom of a mountain. You can see how steep the climb is, how far you have to go, and every obstacle standing between you and the other side. You are exhausted before you even begin.
But Psalm 121 invites us to change where we are looking.
F — Focus: Lift Your Eyes
Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents, traditionally associated with worshipers traveling toward Jerusalem. Imagine looking toward the hills, knowing the journey ahead may be difficult and uncertain.
The psalmist asks a question: Where does my help come from?
He doesn’t leave us wondering.
“My help cometh from the LORD.”
Notice that his help doesn’t come from the mountains. It comes from the One who made them.
Sometimes we become so focused on the size of the mountain that we forget the greatness of its Creator.
The mountain may be bigger than you, but it will never be bigger than your God.
U — Understand: Your Help Has a Name
The Hebrew word translated as help is ʿezer (עֵזֶר). It describes help or assistance and is frequently used in Scripture to describe God’s help for His people.
This is not a picture of a distant God offering occasional encouragement. It is a reminder that the Creator of heaven and earth is the One to whom we can turn.
Think about that.
The same God who spoke creation into existence is not overwhelmed by the circumstances that have overwhelmed you.
Your diagnosis doesn’t intimidate Him. Your financial struggles haven’t caught Him off guard. Your broken relationships, unanswered prayers, uncertain future, and exhausted heart are not beyond His care.
He may not remove every mountain, but He has promised never to abandon His people.
E — Examine: Where Are You Looking for Help?
Sometimes our greatest struggle isn’t that we don’t believe God can help us. It’s that we exhaust every other possibility before we finally turn to Him.
We look to people for answers, circumstances for reassurance, and our own understanding for control.
And when none of those things can fix what is happening, we begin to panic.
What if lifting our eyes is less about ignoring what is in front of us and more about remembering who is above it all?
Faith doesn’t require pretending the mountain isn’t there.
It requires recognizing that the mountain isn’t sovereign. God is.
Psalm 121:3–4 reminds us that our Keeper neither slumbers nor sleeps. Even when exhaustion forces us to rest, God remains watchful.
You don’t have to stay awake trying to hold everything together. You have a Father who never sleeps.
L — Live: Keep Climbing, Keep Trusting
There will be seasons when God moves the mountain. There will be seasons when He leads you around it. And there will be seasons when He gives you the strength to climb it one painful step at a time.
Whatever the journey looks like, your help remains the same.
Lift your eyes when the diagnosis is frightening. Lift your eyes when the bills exceed the bank account. Lift your eyes when your prayers seem unanswered and when you cannot see what tomorrow holds.
Not because looking up magically changes your circumstances, but because it reminds you of the One who walks with you through them.
You don’t need to see the entire path when you know the One who is keeping your feet.
🔥 FUEL CHECK
Are you spending more time studying the mountain in front of you than seeking the God who created it?
Today, identify the burden that has consumed your attention. Bring it before the Lord in prayer, surrender what you cannot control, and take the next faithful step.
Remember: Psalm 121 doesn’t promise a life without difficult journeys. It celebrates a God who faithfully watches over His people throughout the journey.
A prayer for today
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed the mountains in my life to become bigger in my mind than You. When fear overwhelms me, remind me where my help comes from. When I am exhausted, remind me that You never sleep. When I cannot see the path ahead, teach me to trust the One who created the heavens and the earth. Help me lift my eyes above my circumstances and fix them upon You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
