FUEL — AN ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.”
— Hebrews 6:19

There are seasons when life feels like open water.

The wind shifts. The waves rise. What felt steady yesterday suddenly feels uncertain today. And sometimes the hardest part isn’t even the storm—it’s realizing how little control we actually have over it.

Hebrews gives us a beautiful picture for those moments:

Hope is an anchor.

But biblical hope isn’t wishful thinking.

The Greek word translated hope is elpis (ἐλπίς)—a confident expectation rooted in what God has promised.

And the word for anchor, ankyra (ἄγκυρα), is exactly what it sounds like: the heavy object thrown down to keep a ship from being carried away.

Here is what makes Hebrews 6:19 so powerful:

Our anchor doesn’t go down.
Our anchor goes up.

The writer says our hope enters “behind the curtain.”

That is temple language.

Behind the veil was the Holy of Holies—the place representing the very presence of God. Under the old covenant, the high priest entered that place only once a year.

But Hebrews says Jesus has already gone there for us.

“Where Jesus has entered on our behalf as a forerunner…”
— Hebrews 6:20

So our hope isn’t anchored in our circumstances becoming stable.

Our hope is anchored in Jesus, who already is.

The storm can move you.

The waves can shake you.

The wind can scare you.

You may even feel like you’re drifting.

But if your soul is anchored to Christ, you are not drifting alone into nowhere. You are tethered to Someone who has already entered the presence of God on your behalf.

That changes how we face uncertainty.

F — Focus Your Eyes on Jesus

When the waves rise, our instinct is to stare at the waves.

But Hebrews keeps redirecting our eyes toward Jesus.

“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…”
— Hebrews 12:2

Your security isn’t found in knowing what happens next.

It is found in knowing Who holds you next.

Focus on the Anchor, not the waves.

U — Unload Your Burdens to Him

An anchored ship can still feel the storm.

Being anchored doesn’t mean you won’t feel fear, grief, exhaustion, disappointment, or uncertainty.

It means you have somewhere to take them.

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7

You don’t strengthen the anchor by pretending you’re not afraid.

You trust the Anchor by handing Jesus what you cannot carry.

Unload it.

The fear.

The unanswered question.

The thing you cannot fix.

The future you cannot see.

The person you cannot change.

Put it in His hands.

E — Encounter Jesus Daily

An anchor only helps when you’re attached to it.

Yesterday’s encounter with Jesus was beautiful—but your soul needs Him today.

Prayer.

Scripture.

Worship.

Silence before Him.

Sitting in His presence when you don’t have impressive words to say.

Jesus isn’t merely something we believe about.

He is Someone we abide in.

“Abide in me, and I in you.”
— John 15:4

Stay tethered to Him.

L — Live on Fire for the Lord

Here’s the beautiful paradox:

The soul anchored deeply in Christ can live boldly for Christ.

You don’t have to spend your entire life desperately trying to keep yourself from drifting.

Your security is in Jesus.

So love boldly.

Serve boldly.

Obey boldly.

Forgive boldly.

Pray boldly.

Go wherever He calls you.

“Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:58

The world doesn’t need believers who never encounter storms.

It needs believers who can stand in the middle of them and say:

“The waves are real—but so is my Anchor.”

F — Focus: What wave have I been watching more than Jesus?

U — Unload: What am I carrying today that belongs in His hands?

E — Encounter: Have I spent time with Jesus—or only thought about Him?

L — Live: What would courageous obedience look like today if I truly believed my soul was secure in Christ?

Hold onto this:

Your peace doesn’t come from calm water.
Your hope doesn’t come from favorable circumstances.
Your security doesn’t come from knowing what happens next.

Your Anchor is Jesus.

And Hebrews says that anchor is “firm and secure.”

So when the storm comes—and it will—

stay tethered.

The waves may move you.

But they cannot move Him.
